Have you tried "Hoppy"? A kind of drink, which is a mixture of beer and Japanese shochu, we saw on TV. We couldn't find it any stores we went to. If you've tried it before, how was it? Good? Which store did you find it?

  1. I drank with "shochu" too much and got hangover many times.

We can hardly find "hoppy" at ordinary methods.

I was asking for land-master of liquor shop.

Not tasty itself, but mixed with "shochu", it is getting incredibly tasty.

why?  It is one of my mystery.

  2. Yes, I have had it. It wasn't bad-it's a refreshing alternative to "real" beer. It started during the occupation when the average working person couldn't afford beer. Hoppy is sort of a malt-based near beer soft drink. You buy a cheap bottle of Hoppy and mix in cheap shocu and you get ersatz beer.

Nowadays it has made a comback as a retro beverage, just like ramune or Mitsuya cider. It may be hard to find in the stores just because prosperity made it a "fossil brand" a la Royal Crown Cola-try real working-class izakaya or yakitori places if you want to drink it in its natural habitat. To buy just the Hoppy beverage, you could try an old-school sake-ya or corner store-the same sorts of place you might find ramune or Mitsuya cider before Pepsi and Pocari Sweat pushed them off the shelves of more up to date retailors.

  3. It's good, strange taste but good. I've never seen it anywhere other then when I was in Japan just a little while back.
