This is to all employers, HR, and hiring managers: What do you expect out of your candidates you interview?

I'm really bending my back to find a part-time job, which I'm most likely overqualified for; I'm going back to school. I've done 10 years of work experience, and I'm hard working , resourceful and dedicated. However, when I look for work, and it's like reception, or data entry, you people just lose our resumes or don't bother telling us our status. I know there's many people out of work and looking, but it doesn't seem like HR or hiring managers can handle the job to follow up on these people who are struggling to find work. Instead, it seems like they feel comfortable where they're at and would rather do less work by tossing resumes in the garbage. If it were you looking and waiting for a response, you would feel the same way. Well, maybe you're on your way there, so....-venting

  1. I don't know if it's as much a matter of losing your resume as it is dropping it into a reviewed file and forgetting about it. They should follow up with you, you're right, even if it's to let you know that they have reviewed your resume, but you're not the right fit. If it's a job you really want, be sure to send a follow up within 2 weeks of sending your resume, along with another copy of your resume, and ask if it's all right for you to call to follow up on a certain date.

I know you're venting, but you've answered your own question: you're over qualified, you're returning to school. You're not a good candidate as a straight hire for many companies.

Check out a temp agency. It will make it a lot easier for you to find a part-time job. We have several part-time temps working for us, because it allows us to get the added help we need, and allows them to schedule their hours around school, etc. If you work for the agency long enough, many offer paid vacation, insurance, etc, so it's not always a dead end job. And most employers these days are not hiring direct, especially for positions like data entry or reception. These jobs tend to have a high turn-over rate, so it's more cost effective to use a temp agency.

    Good luck!
