To me, it looks like the horse miscalculated but jumped anyway, only trying to land but fell short in some bad way..

What do you guys think?

  1. Well, it is actually the rider's job to walk the course in advance and determine the number of strides, the approach between fences, when to collect or extend strides. The whole ride should be planned in advance. This rider miscalculated and the horse should have taken one more collected stride before starting the jump. To the horse's credit he tried to jump anyway from an impossibly long spot. I am surprised he did not simply stop and refuse the jump. I hope no one was hurt.

  2. Yeah, I agree with Rags...  it's the rider's job to approach the jump giving the horse enough space  to clear the jump.  This was probably a timed event, so she probably didn't want to go deeper into the corners, but had she gone all the way to the rail before turning toward that jump, it would have given her and the horse a little more time to judge the distance until the jump.  The rider should know how to find 3 strides from the jump and should be able to fit all 3 strides in.  It looked to me like they arrived at the jump a half stride too soon...  the rider needed to correct that problem the during the last stride...  when they got to the jump, it would have been too late...  if the horse cantered another stride, it wouldn't have cleared the first bar.  If the rider held the horse back or pushed the horse forward more in the 3 strides before the jump, they would have arrived on time.  It looked like the horse was gonna take another stride before jumping but the girl asked him to leave in mid stride so he tried, but didn't have enough to get over and land... and when he bumped the oxer rail he caught his front feet and couldn't get the feet back under him to land, so he landed on his head instead.
