Are beer guts genetic? My father is German and drinks several beers a night. He's done so since he was in his 20's and now he's 65. I don't need a lecture about him drinking too much! He never ever gets drunk and his doctors have given him a clean bill of health (he gets physicals every year). The thing is, he does not have a beer gut at all! His sister is the same way. She drinks beer every night and still, no beer gut. Actually, she's very athletic! However, many other people I hear about who drink beer will develop a beer gut. I'm just curious to know if this is genetic.

  1. He may drink a lot of beer, but I'm willing to guess if he doesn't have a 'beer' gut, he doesn't eat a lot of unhealthy foods and probably does a bit of physical activity. A few beers every day won't necessarily give you a gut, but eating fatty foods while drinking and sitting around all day certainly will.

Same goes for his sister -- if she's athletic, she's burning off any calories she consumes drinking beer.

  2. I'm not sure about it being genetic but if both your dad and his sister exercise regularly this could be why they haven't developed a beer gut. It's normally a case of beer drinkers getting older and exercising less that invokes a beer belly!
