Question:

This may sound like an odd question, but will I get a lot of time to sail in the Royal Navy?

I'm hopefully going to be a Warfare Officer in the RN. I love the sea and am learning to sail in my spare time. Will I get chance to sail often in the RN, recreationally? Is dinghy or yacht racing a well-supported sport in the RN?

Thanks!

  1. Yes. Once you have qualified and are a "useful" member of "society". (Although being a "Dabber Officer" this is kind of an oxymoron)

You can sail at weekends. You can get 7 days adventurouss training leave a year. We are always hearing about various coastal and open water sailing tours.

  2. You'll have rec time available to you from the word go, but whether you get time to take it or not depends rather a lot on your tasking. If you can get the time off, you get to choose from a fairly big list of possible activities, and sailing is one of them.

If being at sea is your thing, don't worry, because being a warfare officer you'll do practically nothing else but sail.

Vulture... not a pinky or a greeny, were you? :)

  3. Depends what your role is in the RN. The forces fully encourage individual and teams sports, so they will certain give you the time and space to pursue your hobby. Have you spoken with your recruiter? They can give you more information on whats available and how the system works.
