the basic concept is that you are paralyzed while dreaming (to prevent you from acting out your dreams), but on rare occasions you will wake up so fast that your brain hasnt had a chance to un-paralyze your body yet.

not only can feelings of suffocation follow, but also hypnopompic hallucinations. its been suggested that this phenomenon is what leads people to believe they have been abducted by aliens.
