JUSTICE PREVAILS

As they read the verdict,

I squeezed Momma’s hand so hard

that she screamed. Elrod was

getting lethal injection

for what he had done to my sister,

but still, that was not enough.

I let go of Momma

and looked around for something

that I could throw or stab

him with. I wanted the blood

back. I wanted to take

the law into my own hands.

Deputy Claggert walked by,

and, for a moment, I lost my mind.

Before anyone knew it, I had his

Model 19 Smith & Wesson in my hands.

Everybody hit the floor. I turned the gun

on Elrod. My hand trembling, I shouted

“Guilty as charged!”

I squeezed for a moment, but I could

pull the trigger. I turned to his mother

and his sister. I pointed the gun at them.

The tremor in my hands become convulsions.

I turned the gun on me and screamed

an ungodly sound. I looked around.

The fear that I saw was not what I wanted.

Blunted, I fell to the ground.
