  1. I have a friend who was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was in... the university.

Another friend was severely disabled, he never went to high school nor university but pursued a career in music. He is now a director for a children's band, in addition to being a car salesman.

Of course a lot of these students did not even graduate from high school. The thing about special ed students is that every single one has some kind of talent that if properly explored, the student will be able to take advantage of it and be successful later on in life.

  2. In the 70s, 80s, and most of the 90s there was no graduation exam that students had to pass in order to recieve a diploma.  Since most states now require that students must pass a graduation qualifying exam to get a diploma, there are many, many more special education students who are only recieveing certificates of completion...which is pretty sad.  Most people do not realize that many of the accommodations that these students require on a daily basis in order to be successful are not allowed on the GQE.  So you end up with a lot of deserving students who did everything but pass the test end up with a certificate of completion...which rules out many forms of higher education...it is a pretty bad deal.

  3. Here in  Kern County, Ca, SPED students must either pass the high school exit exam or they will only receive a certificate of completion. That exam pretty much eliminates the chances of anyone in Special Ed graduating with a diploma. Heck, it eliminates a lot of kids in Ged Ed from graduating with a diploma.

  4. Here in San Diego, Ca most of the students I know

in Special Ed. still receive a certificate of completion.

  5. I had a friend who was in special education in the 1980s-graduated and workign and supporting herself...

another who graduated in the late 80s now has 2 masters degrees...

  6. I am a SPED teacher.  My son was in SPED in the 80's he had a learning disability.  He went on to college and stopped and got married and is now continuing his education.
