Question:

This seems like a positive place to ask for art criticism, so look at these! ?

I hope this isn't frowned upon by yahoo answer elitists...

But the photos are from around my yard and some from when I lived in Seattle. The doodles are my attempt at self taught art. Is there a "style" you could classify my drawings as? Even a virtual high-five would be appreciated.

  1. I think there is a category for your drawings, they could well come under 'outsider art' or 'raw art', which you can Google for and see if you agree.

I especially like your two from the Canterbury Tales, and I think you have a style and a feel you could well develop here, I found the nun's ear a bit disconcerting, but there is something interesting about the whole thing so I'm not sure if it is too serious.

If you enjoy doing these types of drawings just keep on doing them and exploring, it's very therapeutic and you are not without potential.  Just let them flow and don't be too bothered about judging, or asking to be judged, on whether they are 'art' or not.

As to the photos, I'm not an expert but some look much better than others, my advice would be to ruthlessly edit your photo pages and take out the weaker ones and the ones that are very similar to each other, and then your pages would look much crisper and clearer and more interesting, and your best photos would be shown to advantage, I'd also have separate pages for the drawings.

I enjoyed the photos in general though and some of your drawings so virtual high 5, and definitely keep up the good work.

  2. High fives?  You get high tens from here:)

You were brave enough to ask for a crit...

so you'll get one.  You've displayed evidence

in your photos (I'll go back to them later)

    that you understand composition... which

is something your drawings have in their future:)

Your drawings are wonderful! I want you to

look at the work of the amazing artist Norval

Morrisseau. (See below) Do you know him?

Your 'vision' reminds me of his. Look at the

cohesion.. taking those elements and making

them sing:) There's raw energy and beauty

in your lines.. and a confidence.. so push it...

and fly of the page.  See what happens!  As

for your photos, you 'know' they (most!) are

good.. (loved 100_3161) the 'good ones look

like paintings... just work your contrast to make

    them 'alive.'

Also.. (promise me:) to look at Durer's woodcuts,

(See below) look how he makes every.. line..

count.  Turn your drawings upside-down, look at

them in the mirror.. stretch the boundaries.. take

an art class... make them happen. Look at art

wherever you go! I have faith in you.  Thank you

for sharing....and keep up the good work!

  3. You're photos are awesome on the first page, the second looses a little class, & the third page just seem more like snapshots. But first page? HIGH FIVE!

Your "doodles".... um... I wouldn't call them "art" but I would call them a fair attempt at cartoon drawing. Don't knock it though, cartooning is huge! I say keep up the photography, especially the water scenes (Really nice) & work on the drawings to refine your skills & ideas. Think more about fine tuning & less about Beavis & Butt-head. Don't give up either drawing or photography, you got a good eye!

  4. Personally, I do not like the doodles you've made. I would not buy it.

The photo's are extremely good, though. If I were a publisher, I would definitely published them. Good job on the photo's.

  5. I don't like the drawings (maybe you should look into art classes though.  I think you have potential, just not a style I'm fond of).  The photos are decent, but nothing spectacular.  My favorite is 104_4424... 'cause bugs are creepy.  Anyway, it's a start.  Just keep working at it and you will definitely improve. ^^
