Question:

This sounds stupid. But who finds it harder to throw punches without bigger boxing gloves on?

Most people train on bags and everything wearing gloves. Then when they take the gloves off they find it easier to punch because of it being lighter. This sounds weird but i find it easier to shadow box wearing gloves or wearing a jacket. When ive just got a t shirt on everythin feels too light and weird lol. Anyone else feel the same thing or am i just chatting ****?

  1. I know exactly what you mean. I have very fast hands too and sometimes when I take off my gloves, my hands move way too fast and lose form. There has been times when I accidentally punched myself in the jaw while trying to pull my arms back - lol.

  2. The gloves are for a few reasons, the main one being to protect the boxers hands from becoming useless appendages.

They are also so that a one punch, with speed and force, does not kill the opponent.

I use to train with 16oz gloves. I boxed with 14oz.

One of my trainers used duct tape and added about 7oz to the palm of the gloves and 12oz to the forearms.

It was kinda dangerous, and we were all warned about what NOT to do.

Do NOT power punch, do NOT roundhouse. No Hooks, no Uppercuts.

The extra weighted gloves were for speed bag and shadow boxing.

In shadow, yes, roundhouse, uppercuts, digs, and fast low pummels , but was still dangerous because the extra weight could toss a joint or strain a tendon bad.

That is where we learned control.

I lost a few teeth, never was KO'ed, Laid a few opponents out first round. A few knocked me down first round.

Once you get the footwork and the upper body work in unison, one can be a quite formidable opponent.

Is a balancing act, is almost ballet.

I had fun, and always shook hands before and after a bout.

  3. Bigger boxing gloves don't give the kind of power that 12 ounce give but you are sparring and not trying to do any serious damage to your opponent. If it was a pro match then the smaller gloves get into play. Keep in mind 16 ounce gloves you are wearing 2 pounds of padding on your hands. I box better without my shirt on even though I don't have the body to go shirtless. So what.

  4. Boxers use this 'light' feeling as a way of teaching there body to move at faster speeds.  Your punch is only so fast with a glove on and when you take it off you punch slighty faster because its lighter.  This gives your brain a chance to foresee the feeling of moving faster without straining the body.  Then put the glove back on and try to match the new speed.  Intervals of 100 punches with a glove and 100 with out would be a good start.

I learned this from practicing drums.
