Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again nest year?

You can put up a fake owl to detract the birds, but it has to be moved once in awhile.( the birds will figure out it isn't real if you don't) It might even detract the squirrels.  You could always get a cat. I have tons of trees in my yard at my new house and the birds would c**p all over my cars. My cats and a fake owl did the trick!
