Question:

This whole "Earth hour" idea is good but why do people just keep doing these temporary conservation efforts?

This whole "Earth hour" idea is good but I'm sick and tired of people and companies raising "awareness" of global warming. It literally does nothing. NBC had its "green week" a couple months ago where it used minimal power to do its broadcasts and it saved enough power to power a ton of homes for like a month. Well here's a big idea....instead of doing it for a week, why not do it every day and set an example? Doing it for a week will do nothing. Same with the Sydney Opera house shutting its lights off for an hour. Ooooh, now you're really saving the planet. Does anyone else feel this way?

  1. my friend told me that in her hometown in India, (not sure where though , sorry xD) they have their electricity cut from 8 - 9 EVERY night. no choice. thats the government.

great eh? its like earth hour every night there!

  2. Like a wise man once said,

"Even a thousand mile journey begins with a single step."

  3. I do it whenever possible. When we are out ,everythig is turned off, and the heating system is turned way down. There is no need for lights when the TV is on. The remote will turn the TV off when I fall asleep. I have the new light bulbs. and I am constantly looking for new ideas to conserve. I conserve fuel by leaving early and driving slowly, this give me better mileage . I soak the clother in the washer then spend lest time for the washing cycle.  I use my clothes dryer less, by hanging clothes on hangers  in the bathroom to finish up drying. The shades on the windows are up in order to get solar heat , to warm the rooms. I still need more ideas.........

  4. It might raise awareness to hold an event as such.  If someone reads about Earth Hour it might get the wheels turning in their head about what else they could be doing.  In my city we are promoting an electric free hour in conjunction with Earth Day.  We are sitting at tables in grocery stores getting the word out about conservation of electricity.   Baby steps my dear, baby steps!

  5. we'd conserve so much if we changed our diets! you can do that YOURSELF by eating LESS meat... we are ruining the rainforests... think about this: producing a single hamburger patty uses up enough fuel do drive 8 MILES! how? well youve got to feed the cow for how ever many years before you kill it... then youve got the factories are using up all this energy... driving the cow to the factory... killing the cow... its a lot of work. Keeping the cow alive takes energy. For all of the food you feed the cow to keep it alive up until the time you kill it for meat, you couldve just fed a WHOLE ton of people... the american meat diet is a totaly wastful thing. If you switched to the vegetarian diet... it would be MORE effective than buying a prius. So this isnt an issue of money, its an issue of what you EAT... and its a cheaper diet... how ironic. youll be healthier too by the way. Theres tons of articles on these issues...

  6. To use a well known quote,

"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

Please let's not debate the "a" this is the way Neil said it, besides in this case its even more appropriate.

  7. I agree with you.  Conserving energy should be done on a daily basis.  We are a wasteful society, and it's not going to really improve by turning out the lights for an hour.

In Toronto, they are having a free acoustic concert to celebrate.  What a ridiculous idea.  What about all the energy consumed by commuters trying to get to and from the venue ?  What about all the batteries consumed by portable lighting ?

  8. I really like the idea, but I do kind of agree.  I hope people just don't do this event to feel good for one hour because their not wasting energy and think they did their part and never think about it again.  We should do things like this way more often.

  9. It would be smarter to go for more recycling efforts and to use energy that doesn't pollute, or at least doesn't pollute as much.

The mounting piles of waste that could be turned into a usable fuel and metals source are being bypassed.

Build more generation facilities based on natural flows such as tidal currents, and possibly, more nuclear facilities like France.

The company that's pushing the Global Warming thing is GE. Guess what products they produce and what companies the mother company owns.

  10. Yep... Earth Hour, Earth Day.... they aren't enough.

We all need to start making better choices in our behavior every hour of every day.

It is easier than people think.
