Do we honestly see each other caring about poverty in Africa years later. Didn't we have similar charitable fads with Asia a decade back?

  1. Africans need to do something to save themselves 1st before we give them anymore financial aid.

  2. It's not a fad, the US is just jumping on the bandwagon. European countries have been trying to save Africa from the Africans since colonial times.

  3. yeah-  africa is kind of like new kids on the block, or menudo...

  4. I don't think it's a fad, and it's certainly not comprised of only white Americans. The majority of people have always cared, but were either not educated about the issues in Africa or were just unsure of how to help. With advances in technology such as the internet, Americans, and in fact people all over the world can do anything from signing petitions online to donating money over the internet. I do think that we'll continue to have many Americans who will want to help Africa in the coming decades. There may be periods of increase and decrease in attention to the cause, but I certainly do not think it is a fad.

  5. It is an interest which waxes and wanes as new people get interested in it, and other people get disgusted when they realize the various schemes to help the people are not accomplishing a darn thing constructively.

I am now over age 60 ... my whole life I have seen campaigns to get people to give up smoking, to help the starving children in Africa and other places, to do something to help the endangered species, to stop messing up the environment, to improve civil rights for everyone ... well there has been some improvements in some areas, but we can take the solgans of 50 years ago, and the same needs condinue to exist today, in some cases more dire.

I have participated in some of those movements.

I feel the problem is that the efforts are short sighted out of ignorance, without really studying what will solve the problems.

There are institutions and workers who would lose their jobs if the problems were solved ... look at child abuse, road rage, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, drunk driving ... there will never be a total solution, because it would put too many people out of work.

  6. No worse than all the time spent on the great injustices focused on here...like name calling & who in hollywood's in rehab...

  7. I hope its a fad....why are we spending millions when a condom is only 25 cents...if your to dumb to put one on they serves you right. We have to many problems over here at home to go gallivanting about trying to save people who don't want to be saved.

  8. No not a fad....people have been trying to save Africa since the missionaries first went there in the early 1800's

  9. W e need to get home and take care of our own before we  help others .

  10. america always tryna act like its superior. i think america should concentrate on helping out its own people first.
