  1. For bad sectors on the disk you need to go to properties on the drive, then tools and check disk (chkdsk) but set both check boxes to on. The machine will complain about not being able to do this until a re-start. Re-start and let it run the check during boot. Do NOT interrupt this as it can trash the system if you do. If their are too many bad sectors it may still fail, but if there are many you really should be replacing the drive immediately as it is an indication of imminent failure.


  2. chkdsk disk doctor does a surface scan only, there is only one commercial program I know of that will actually find errors, and recover data from the errors. google spinrite.

    go to download.com and get hdd health its freeware. if you have a healthy drive, use windows disk check. if its not. get spinrite, capture what data you can, and get Norton's ghost to duplicate your drive to a new hard drive
