Kalpana Chawla.  A tragic loss.  I don't know about her personality, but doesn't she look like a kind and optimistic person?

The folks at NASA thought she was pretty incredible, too, and she was on the fast track to becoming our first female mission commander.  On the STS-51 mission, she was the one who sat right behind the pilot and commander, the number 3 person.  She was responsible for holding a book that had all the mission guidelines, special instructions and protocols for whatever might occur, and reading off those things if and when they were needed.  Big, thick book.  They said she had it memorized.
