Montpellier coach Rene Girard has rallied his troops ahead of the final furlong by saying that they should aim for the Championelle as it might be the only chance that the club ever get to win the league
If he is careful to state openly that they can play for the title, Montpellier Herault coach Rene Girard feels that his team can certainly do something great this season. While talking to L’Equipe, the French tactician said that PSG are not better than his
side.
As things stand, La Paillade trail Paris Saint-Germain by a solitary point and judging by current form, both sides might take the title assault down to the wire. Last Sunday, Montpellier beat Caen 3-0 and after the game, Girard ‘dropped the mask’ by saying
that his side actually do have a big chance of winning their first ever Ligue 1 crown.
Though Montpellier are living a dream season, Girard knows that things are bound to get complicated.
A few months back, Montpellier Herault lost two successive games in the Ligue 1. The first was at the hands of Valenciennes and the second was at the hands of Evian TG. However, since then, La Paillade have not lost a single game in the league. Many feel
that the defeat against Evian was the turning point of the season.
“It’s a defeat that came just after another in Valenciennes as we toured a path of fire. The fact that it happened in quick succession prompted the players to look in the mirror. On resumption, we talked about it, discussed our problems and how to avoid
them. What it interesting is the maturity of this group.”
However, Girard has admitted that his side actually do have a great chance of winning the title if they stay consistent. The French tactician knows that the club might never be so well-placed to lift the Championelle for years and feels that his side can
do something brilliant this season.
Certainly, the rapid rise of Montpellier has been a breath of fresh air in the league this term. An antithesis of Paris Saint-Germain, one can say that if there is one team that deserves to fight for the title against PSG, it is Montpellier.
