Thistle Bird triumphs in Princess Elizabeth Stakes – Horseracing news
Thistle Bird won the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom in England on Friday, May 31, 2013.
She had entered the competition with the best odds and succeeded in earning the winning cash prize of £34,026 in the end.
Due to some showers at the venue, the going was not quick enough for the participants to come out attacking. Some of them were under immense pressure, as they do not like running on a softer ground.
However, Thistle Bird did not panic at all, as she controlled the race despite getting off to a bad start. Although she would have wanted to be ahead right from the start of the proceedings, the overall distance to cover was more than one mile, so she always
had a chance of bouncing back.
This was exactly what the five-year-old mare did, as she started gaining positions towards the final few furlongs. Once she was in the lead, no one really managed to challenger her and she finished on top of the table easily.
The winning rider James Doyle said of his challenger, “She deserved this. She was very consistent last year and I am pleased with the way she did it. She stays quite well and I always thought Richard Hughes would come back to me. I did not want to take it
up too early and it turned out to be quite straightforward.”
On the other hand, the triumphant trainer Roger Charlton was also pleased with the outcome of the race and stated, “She got the trip really well. At some stage we might explore going further again. She was more relaxed today have been a bit keen previously.
She will probably go to Royal Ascot to run in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes.”
This race also marked the return of veteran jockey Frankie Dettori, who was out of action for the past six months because of testing positive to a drug test. Although the Italian rider was delighted on his return, the result of the race would not have pleased
him at all.
Dettori was partnering Beatrice Aurore in the event, but the pair finished at the bottom of the table in ninth place.
