Thomas Aiken leads into final round of the Open de Espana – Golf news
Thomas Aiken is still in the lead after posting an even par in the third round of the Open de Espana.
Aiken, now at eight under par, is leading the pack by two strokes. All the golfers played with a heavy heart as the Spanish golfing legend, Seve Ballesteros passed away after losing his battle with brain cancer. The play in the third round was stopped for
a minute as the players and the crowd prayed for Ballesteros in the moment of silence.
The South African golfer remained in the top position as he gave a decent performance in the third round. The player stared with a bogey on the sixth hole but overcame with a birdie on the seventh. Making another birdie on the eleventh hole, Aiken posted
a bogey on the fourteen hole. This round was not as eventful as Friday’s where Aiken posted six birdies and two bogeys. Overall, Aiken is still in the lead and is hoping to maintain it to attain his maiden title.
In second place are Anders Hansen, Scott Jamieson, Romain Wattel and Pablo Larrazabal. All the aforementioned players are at six under par and still not far from the top of the leader board.
During the moment of silence, Spanish players Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal wept and continued doing so throughout the third round. Olazabal actually played with Ballesteros in many Ryder Cups and their pair was also known as the Spanish Armada.
Having great memories together, Olazabal played with a heavy heart.
Olazabal, who is the pick for next Ryder Cup captain, posted a three over par in the third round. The player had a decent front nine with two birdies and one double bogey. In the back nine, Olazabal made four bogeys and one birdie.
“I just played the most difficult round of my life. It was very tough to make it to the first tee and hit the first drive,” said Olazabal. “I didn’t doubt about playing today. The last thing he would have wanted would have been for me not to play. I don’t
think there will ever be another player like him. There can be others that are very good, but none will have his charisma.”
