Thomas Aiken stands a decent chance at the DP World Tour Championship
Thomas Aiken has not won this season but he has been playing some decent golf throughout. The South African remained very solid this year.
He missed the cut in only four of the tournaments and, considering the fact that he was playing on three tours this season, that is a major achievement.
Out of the four cuts that he missed, two of them were on the US Open and the PGA Championship.
“I've only missed four cuts the whole year on three tours – the US (PGA), the European and this tour (Sunshine) so I can't be too disappointed about that”, said the current world number 111.
Aiken now heads to Dubai to play in the DP World Tour Championship. The current world number 111 is ranked at the 51th spot on the Race to Dubai standings.
The South African’s best performance this season has been at the British Open, where he matched Tiger Woods toe to toe on the last few rounds. Thomas finished T7 at the Royal Lytham in United Kingdom.
After the British Open, he really transformed in to a new look. He played some tremendous golf after that. Although he could not win, he demonstrated decent performances on the whole.
After missing the cut at the Singapore Open, Aiken was slightly disappointed but he bounced back really well at the South African Open.
He played some excellent golf at the Serengeti Golf Club, where he finished third. His T3 finish must have given him confidence heading to Dubai.
The fact that Aiken is coming off from a decent week in South Africa will help him at Jumeirah.
Playing in Dubai is altogether a different ball game, as the conditions are new but he stands a decent chance with the way he is playing at the moment.
If Aiken wants to win at Jumeirah, then he must concentrate on his putting. His work on the greens has not been up to the mark. That is one reason why he has not shot many low rounds this year.
“I haven't had too many fantastic rounds so it's been down to the putting. I haven't sunk as many putts as the last couple of years,” he stated.
“I've hit the ball fantastically, given myself a lot of opportunities, but haven't capitalised on too many. Aiken got married and took time away from the game earlier in the season, and he managed to produce solid results on his return,” said Aiken.
Rory McIlroy is surely being tipped as the favourite to win the tournament due to the fact that he has been in sublime form this season.
However, there are always some dark horses in the tournament and Thomas Aiken could be one of them, provided that he putts well at the Jumeirah Golf and Country Club.
