The former German international has insisted that Die Mannschaft should not experiment with the defence in a tournament of this stature.
Germany coach Joachim Low had to ponder on which player should replace the suspended Jerome Boateng in the game against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Denmark-c2884. There were suggestions that the team should shift Philipp Lahm to his natural right-back position
and bring in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marcel-Schmelzer-c23530 on the left. The other options included playing with a three-man defence and another one was to replace Boateng with Lars Bender, which was eventually taken.
However, former German international Thomas Berthold has admitted that a three-man defence would certainly not have been a very good idea for a team such as Germany. He insisted that Die Nationalelf do not have players like Sergio
Ramos, who can play both central and full-back roles effectively.
The former Bayern Munich and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VfB-Stuttgart-c40879 defender stated that Joachim Low should not experiment with the team in a competition of this stature even though the inclusion of Bender reaped rewards for him in the previous game against
Denmark.
The option of the three-man defence would have included the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Philipp-Lahm-c29929.
“I do not think much of that idea at all. If a team has three world-class players at the back like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sergio-Ramos-c33096. Therefore, we should stay away.
We want to measure ourselves against Spain and beat them, we need to play at the same level as them,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, Berthold claimed that Ozil has looked stressed in the last two games so the manager should rest him for a game and use him as an impact player in the second-half.
“Mesut Ozil looks a bit tired after his long season with Real Madrid. He could also be played for one half-time only [against Denmark], or brought in later on as a substitute,” he concluded.
