Thomas Björn finishes second at the Lyoness Open – Golf news
Thomas Björn was left to rue some minor misfortunes on day four of the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity, after he had to settle for the second position in the tournament, on Sunday, June 9, 2013.
The Dane star started his final round campaign sharing the fourth spot on the leaderboard, five strokes behind the leader and eventual winner Joost Luiten.
He then added birdies on the fourth and the seventh hole, while conceding a bogey on sixth, to reach the turn in one-under.
On the back nine of the course, he picked up some pace and birdied the 10th and the 12th hole, to move within two shots of the lead.
Thereafter, he parred each of the next five holes, before ending his round with another birdie putt on the 18th hole, to take the sole second position in the event.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he said that he tried his best to mount a title charge in the final round. However, Luiten did not allow him to get close to him, and eventually, he had to finish two strokes behind the winner.
“I played very well at the weekend but I just didn’t do enough today,” he said. “I bogeyed the sixth and that made it a tough challenge, but I played well down the stretch and tried to put some pressure on.”
“I hit a lot of good shots. I was a little too aggressive with the putt on the 16th. They didn’t quite drop today, but I putted really well all week and that’s the biggest thing I’ve been struggling with for a long time. It’s been nice to putt well two weeks
in a row,” he added.
He also said that Luiten has everything that is required to become a world class player and praised the way he held of his nerves in the final moments of the game.
Wen-Chong Liang of China was another player who made a strong charge on the leaderboard, in the final round, as he fired a six-under par 66 to finish tied third on the leaderboard.
