Thomas Bjorn hopes to retain his title at this week’s Commercialbank Qatar Masters
Thomas Bjorn might just be riding on a high tide for the moment, coming out one of the glistening seasons of his career and hopes to carry on with the excellent form in the current year.
The 40-year-old Dane, who is also on the advisory committee on the European Tour, will now be heading into the Commercialbank Qatar Masters presented by Dolphin Energy in a bid to defend the title he won almost 12 months ago.
Bjorn said, “It's a fantastic place to go and play on a course like Doha and like the ones we play in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It's got a great history on our Tour, and that's what you want. This is a fantastic swing for us on three magnificent golf courses”.
Bjorn has won thrice on the European Tour last year and has put up a strong fight in his season-opener the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship last week.
He surged to the top of the leaderboard earlier in the final round but his misadventures forced him to fall back, finishing for a strong joint third, trailing the leader Robert Rock by two shots.
Coming from behind last year in Qatar, Bjorn managed to make up for the disappointing 74 in the opening round, to finally lift the title on the weekend, four shots ahead of the runner-up Alvaro Quiros.
He understands the course as well as the notorious wind that can render a good drive worthless at any given time of the day.
He added, “The wind that can be in Qatar can make for very tough days out on the course. On those occasions you take a par, and then just try and roll in a few here and there for birdie if you have the chance”.
Bjorn believes his performance at Qatar last year triggered to what can be regarded his best season on the European Tour in his professional career.
He went over to win the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and the Omega European Masters where he outplayed his nemesis, the raging young guns Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer.
Bjorn has 13 European Tour titles on his belt in his 19 professional titles worldwide. He is known to be one of the top-ranked players from continental Europe.
