Thomas Bjorn posts a massive victory at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland – Golf news
Dane Thomas Bjorn pulled in a massive nine-under, 62, on the final day of the Omega European Masters to win the tournament by a convincing lead of four shots. Played at the scenic Crans-Sur-Sierre with the lofty Swiss Alps on the horizon, Bjorn carded 20-under,
264, on the aggregate to post another victory for the season. He has already won twice on the tour this year and has now soared to the top-30 spots in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Bjorn, after posing for photographs with the giant Omega European Masters trophy, said, “To win three times in one season is a marvelous achievement and I’ve reached a good level of consistency now. Hopefully I can continue that through to the Dubai World
Championship.”
Bjorn was coming out of his recent win at the Johnnie Walker Championship in Gleneagles, Scotland, last week and was feeling a bit stressed and weary with the victory. As the event progressed, Bjorn began to feel the heat of the fine form that he has been
into lately, and decided to rattle into top form yet again.
By the end of the third round, Bjorn was resting at joint fourth but a fiery final round catapulted him to the summit and that also, four shots clear of the rest of the field. The 40-year-old has now surged to number seven in Race to Dubai Rankings and will
be hoping to continue with his fine form until the culmination of the current season.
“I’ve moved up a place in The Race to Dubai and I want to end the season strongly,” said a jubilant Bjorn. “I’m in a good position.”
US Open champion, Rory McIlroy, who had decided to stay back to play on his home tour, settled for a joint third and appears to have recovered from the wrist injury he acquired at the PGA Championship last month.
“I feel healthy after the wrist injury - I feel 100 per cent and that’s a positive sign heading towards the end of the season,” said the Northern Irishman who shared the third place along with Jaco Van Zyl and Jamie Donaldson.
Kaymer finally came back to his once splendid form, showing visible signs of improvement in his putting and iron shots. Finishing for an outright second, Kaymer shot a 65 on the final day to settle for an aggregate of 268, trailing Bjorn by four shots. He
earned € 222,220 for the runner-up share and will be hoping to defend his title at the KLM Open scheduled this week.
The event will boost one of the strongest fields in its 92nd instalment and Kaymer will be hoping not only to topple Luke Donald from the Number One spot, but also summit the Race to Dubai Rankings.
