Thomas Bjorn strikes back in third round of Abu Dhabi Championship: Live Leaderboard Part-3
World number one Luke Donald had a devastating third day on the elusive Abu Dhabi Golf Club when the top-ranked player fell for bogey on par-five, 8th, followed by a double-bogey on par-four, 9th.
Having started the day with three glistening birdies on the front, Donald must have contemplated to grab lead on the following holes before the terrible loss. He made the turn and remained on the back foot, dropping another bogey at par-four, 14th
to settle for one-over, 73 for the day.
He is now pitched at joint 54th with an aggregate of one-over, 216.
European Ryder Cup Captain for this year, Jose Maria Olazabal probably had the worst day on the course with a whooping six-over, 78. Starting up on a birdie, the veteran Spaniard fell for a terrible double-bogey on par-for, 3rd to fall back.
He made the turn after falling for another two bogeys on the front nine. By this time, Olazabal had already lost his composure and dropped consecutive shots from 13th to 16th.
He is now at the bottom of the leaderboard and has lost all chances of soaring into contention on the final day.
First round co-leader, Rory McIlroy, one of the most sought after player on the field, had another disappointing day on Saturday.
After having suffered two penalties on the second day, McIlroy was hoping to strike back on the third day, but has pulled in a humble two-under for the moment.
He is still working for the last four holes on the back nine. The Ulsterman carded three birdies and dropped a shot on par-four, 6th.
Top-ranked European player, Thomas Bjorn had a blistering day on the course, when he pulled in a massive seven-under, 65 to surge into contention.
Carding no fewer than six birdies on the front, Bjorn thrashed the field to rise to the top of the leaderboard, threatening the grizzled field for the lead. He dropped a shot on the back nine before carding another two birdies before he called it a day.
43-year-old Dane won three titles on the tour last year including the star-studded Omega European Masters and is in top form to clinch another title early in the season.
