Thomas Bjorn wins Qatar Masters
Thomas Bjorn of Denmark has won the $2.5 million Qatar Masters. The event held at the Doha Golf Club was bagged by Bjorn with an impressive four shots. He posted three under 69 in the bogey free final round and finished the tournament with a total score
of 14-under-par 274.
After his victory, the most successful Danish golfer in the world said, “In the end it became a bit of a cruise, but I'm delighted with the week. I played solid golf - I think I made one bogey in the last 54 holes. On this golf course and in these conditions,
that's good going." Bjorn also felt confident enough to take on the best in the world and achieve bigger targets in the future. This was the second victory in the Middle East after 2001 for vice Captain of the European Ryder Cup team, when he beat Tiger Woods.
This win had brought a drastic change in his rankings from no. 133 into the top 60. The breakthrough win, which came after he ended up finishing a couple of Qatar Tournaments as runner-up, has also helped him to secure a place at the World Match play championship
to be held in Arizona later this year.
Bjorn took birdies at the 16th and 18th hole which effectively minimized Alvaro Quiros’ chances for the trophy. The Spaniard was the runner-up at the tournament with ten under. He was happy with his performance and later said, “I was
thinking I was going to finish in the top five and if I’m going to finish second I’m lucky.”
The Qatar Masters was largely publicized for being a square off between the top two golfers in the world golf rankings. There was a bright chance of Martin Kaymer toppling Lee Westwood from the top spot.  However, Martin Kaymer finished the event at 28th
place with one under 71 after a disastrous first round with one under par 77. On the other hand, Lee Westwood also failed to make the cut. Both the golfers retain their rankings despite poor performances.
The results of the event were quite unexpected as Qatar Masters had an impressive field including four of the seven top players at the world golf rankings. Golfers like Paul Casey and Ian Poulter failed to meet expectations. Steve Stricker, seventh in the
world rankings, finished in 45th place with one over. Sergio Garcia visibly looks to be getting his form back with a finish inside the top ten. Most of the golfers pointed at tough golfing conditions the reason for the slump in their games.
