Thomas Coyle, Dave Allen and Kurt Haggerty extend stay with Widnes Vikings – Rugby League
Cheshire based English Rugby League side, Widnes Vikings, has announced the re-signing of the experienced and talented trio of Thomas Coyle, Dave Allen and Kurt Haggerty. Officials at the club have confirmed the players extensions with the Vikings in a statement
released on their website on Thursday, July 28.
The retention of the trio has helped the Vikings to strengthen their squad for their Cooperative Championship’s 2012 season. Vikings participate in the second tier of the European Rugby league, known as Cooperative Championship. In 2011 season, Vikings
were placed in third position with 33 points coming from 15 games.
Widnes Vikings head coach, Denis Betts, has expressed his delight at retaining the services of the veteran players. He individually praised the skills and abilities of the trio and highlighted what they bring to the team.
Betts termed the 25-year-old Dave Allen as a sensational player and a great asset for the club in their drive to play in the Super League championship. He added, “All he (Allen) needs now is a full-time environment to build and nurture his already impressive
skill-base and we've offered him that opportunity.”
Betts has expressed his delight with the performance of the 23-year-old Thomas Coyle for the club. In 2010 season, Thomas made 20 appearances for Vikings and scored eight tries for them.
Commenting further on Coyle, Betts added, “Week in week out, Thomas has been our best player this season, bar none. He's another lad who had a taste of Super League when he was younger and admits that it probably all came a little bit too easily for him.”
The 22-year-old Kurt Haggerty missed most of the season due to a knee injury. However, backed by his impressive performance in the games he has played, the Vikings handed over a contract with an option of extending it a year, if mutually agreed.
Betts has termed Haggerty as a player with great “untapped potential.” He has expressed his hope that the new full-time contract will help Haggerty to develop the skills which he already possesses.
