Thomas Cup Finals: Jonas Rasmussen, Fischer Nielsen satisfied with their effort against Malaysia
The newly formed pair of Jonas Rasmussen-Joachim Fischer Nielsen of Denmark was given a task to prove their mettle against Malaysia in Thomas Cup Finals and both partners looked relaxed with the results of the Group match, staged on May 22, 2012.
Both Men’s Doubles experts forged a fruitful chemistry against Malaysian pair Koo Kien Keat-Goh V Shem and bagged a winning point by registering final totals of 21-18 and 21-15.
This match was crucial for both countries as only group winners were going to enter in quarter-finals as seeded contestants which meant a favourable draw in elimination round.
Denmark gambled by fielding a unique combination of Rasmussen and Nielsen in second Doubles tie as both partners, despite of having a decade long career never played together at the international level.
The 33-year-old member of the duo, Fischer Nielsen was dancing on air after securing this commendable triumph and he showed contentment over their performance.
He said, “We have practiced together in the national team for the last 10 years but never teamed up. We probably would have played two matches prior to the Finals but I am glad we delivered today.”
Though, former World champions found a solid base as Denmark was just one point away from victory but they did not lose their focus and outclassed Malaysian couple in just two games.
They set the foundation by clinching very first set with a decent margin of 21-18 and then served the notice of their supremacy by putting a significant 21-15 score in second set.
Jonas Rasmussen, who usually teams up Mads Conrad Petersen in Men’s Doubles event, stated that the Malaysians were completely off colour in both games and this helped them to overcome the scratch pair.
He said, “It all boils down to our experience. We were able to dominate the game because the Malaysians were hardly hitting down the smashes. They were playing for the first time and it showed.”
The Danish Men’s Doubles department played vital role in this victory as both couples fetched the best when their compatriots could not live up to their billing in the Singles event.
