Thomas Dekker optimistic for the World Championships
Thomas Dekker is expected to ride along David Millar and Andrew Talansky at the UCI Road World Championships, Team Time Trial event in Valkenburg this weekend.
A total number of six cyclists from each side will ride the event and although Team Garmin-Sharp has not yet announced its final squad but Millar, Talansky and Dekker are most likely to make it through to the final squad.
The race is scheduled on Sunday, September 16, and men’s and women’s trade teams will participate at the 53.2 kilometre and 34.2 kilometre tracks respectively.
"It's difficult to say what the expectations are, but you always go for the highest, but I think it will be really good if we could do top five, the podium would be amazing and winning, that would be incredible," Dekker voiced.
"It a difficult parcours and it's technical as we go over the Cauberg as well. You can always expect the big teams like Sky, QuickStep, RadioShack and GreenEdge to up there but no one really knows."
The 27-year-old served a two-year ban for EPO and marked his return to professional cycling on July 6th, 2012 with Team Garmin.
His last appearance at the Vuelta a Espana was during the 2007 version of the race and despite a late invite, he was delighted to get back on his bike on Spanish terrains this year.
While commenting on the three-week race, Thomas briefed that he found it pretty difficult especially at the mountain stages of the race.
It appeared as the Dutch might abandon the race but he managed to complete the event and noted that it was a great learning experience for him.
Thomas has grabbed two stage victories in the current season, including a team’s time trial win at the Tour of Qatar and a stage 5 win at the Circuit de la Sarthe 2012.
Only time will tell how he performs at the UCI Road World Championships, as his every move will be cheered by the home crowd.
The Championship is scheduled from September 15 to September 23rd and all the top cyclists from different corners of the world will gather in Limburg, Holland, to participate in the biggest cycling gala of the year.
