Thomas Rohregger to represent RadioShack-Nissan-Trek at the Giro d' Italia 2012
Thomas Rohregger will ride for the new squad, Team RadioShack-Nissan-Trek, for the coming season. The cyclist is aware of the fact that he will mainly ride to help his teammates but will also get his own chances for the coming season.
The 23-year-old started his professional career in 2005, with Team Elk Haus-Simplon and stayed with the team for a period of four years. He then moved to Team Milram from 2009 to 2010 and finally joined Leopard Trek in 2011.
Thomas won the mountains classifications at the Tour Down Under 2010, along with an overall fourth place finish at the Tour of Austria 2011.
He made his first ever grand tour appearance during the Vuelta a Espana 2011 and won the stage 1 of the event.
The cyclist will be seen in action at the Italian Grand Tour and his main job will be to support Jakob Fuglsang, especially through the mountains.
He is also keen to take his own chances at the event and bag some stage wins while supporting his team.
Rohregger told Der Standard, “It is a great feeling, to have for example two colleagues in the top ten of the Vuelta, or when Bennati wins sprint stages, besides, my roommate Oliver Zaugg showed with his win at the Giro di Lombardia, that something is possible and that encourages me in my ambitions and to keep following my goal”.
The Austrian might not ride in the Tour de France 2012 because the French grand tour will not require as many climbers as the Giro.
Rohregger stated, “The climbers won't be needed so much, as the Tour 2012's profile is not as difficult as the Giro or Vuelta”.
Thomas is also eyeing the London Olympics and is eager to take on the challenge. He accepts that the Olympics course does not really suit his abilities but he is still keen to try his luck at the mega event.
Rohregger started his career as a domestique and helped his teammates to secure victories on many occasions.
He is looking ahead for a promising season and Giro d’ Italia 2012 is a golden opportunity for the young cyclist to make an impression in the new team.
