The Werder Bremen manager feels that his team was unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty in the clash on Saturday.
Werder Bremen resumed their Bundesliga duties on Saturday, January 21, when they travelled away to Fritz-Walter-Stadion. Both teams were unable to break the deadlock and had to share the spoils.
Bremen manager, Thomas Schaaf, feels that his team should have been awarded a penalty after Sebastian Prodl picked up a serious facial injury resulting from Dorge Kouemaha’s tackle inside the six-yard box. However, the referee
saw the incident as completely accidental, and did not even issue a warning to the striker.
As a result, Prodl, was forced off the field in the 29th minute, and was replaced by Mikael Silvestre in the defence. Later on, the Austrian was detained in the hospital with a fractured cheekbone and a broken nose.
Prodl has also been advised rest by the medical staff which means that the 24-year-old will be unavailable to the River Islanders for an indefinite period.
While talking during the pre-match press conference, the manager further insisted:
"It is bad that we were not given the penalty, but even worse, of course, that Sebastian has picked up a serious injury."
Bremen skipper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Clemens-Fritz-c9348, also expressed his anger at the defender’s injury, and believes that the referee must have been helped by his assistants. The skipper further elaborated:
"I spoke to him (the referee) about the incident and he told me that he could not see anything from where he was. I think he should have been helped by his assistant - he must have seen it."
On the other hand, Bremen’s sporting director, Klaus Allofs, seemed more concerned with his player’s injury, but stressed that the referee must have at least taken some kind of action against Kouemaha’s careless play.
"It is sad that Basti is so badly injured, but it is also sad that the referee did not blow his whistle. It is not about the penalty not being given, which certainly would have relaxed us a little, but that we had to play the rest
of the game without Sebastian," Allofs concluded.
As a result of Saturday’s dull draw, Bremen find themselves seven points short from the top spot, while Kaiserslautern are just one point clear of the drop zone.
