In a hard-bitten battle, Thomas Schoorel of Netherlands supplied no opportunity to his contender, local Matteo Viola to take the better of him. Seven aces were seen in the whole match consisted of three sets, six of
them coming from the 21-year-old Dutch. Both opponents double faulted six times and eventually The Dutch prevailed the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(3) set score securing a spot for himself in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Barletta Open Challenger event.
Schoorel made his most recent appearance at the Marseille, France, where he succeeded in making it past the second round of qualifying draw defeating Andrej Martin and Vincent Millot, before losing to Romain Jouan in
the qualifying competition. He also emerged victorious at the 2010 Italy F4 defeating Martin Fischer of Austria in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Following that win, he appeared at Netherlands F3 and Netherlands F4 and managed to clinch his victories consecutively
in a row.
Playing their first match ever, Dutch had the early lead as he struck two aces and 62 per cent of first serves, winning 65 per cent of points on them. Viola on the other hand started off equally good but three double
faults on his part allowed his Dutch opponent to lead forth the first set with 6-4 score line.
Viola seeking revenge against the Dutch came out firing in the second set and blasted it off with a 7-5 score line. The Italian, viola brought his magnificent tennis skills into play and fired in 67 per cent first serves
and won 64 per cent points on them. Though all other things being equal, Viola did one better than him converting 75 per cent of his break point opportunities and that handed him the second set with a 7-5 score line.
After his loss in the second set, the Dutch was none the worse for the deciding set, striking in two aces and 57 per cent of first serves. He had a better conversion rate of 64 per cent as opposed to Viola’s 59 per
cent. The Dutch was back in his full form as he crafted 7 break point opportunities and availed 5 of them. Depositing his over-all performance into good use the 21-year-old Dutch pushed the match in a tie-break situation, winning it 7-3 in his favour.
Thomas Schoorel will meet Andreas Haider-Maurer in the quarter finals of 2011 Barletta Open. This will be their first ever meeting on courts.
