The former Bayern Munich midfielder has cautioned the Bavarian giants of the threat posed by Basel
Strunz was talking in the wake of the UEFA Champions League last-16 round draws after his former employers were drawn against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Basel-c39079.
The 43-year-old reckons that the Bavarians can better the Swiss Champions but he has advised them not to underestimate their opponents. He opined that Basel is a top team and they have proved it by knocking former Champions Manchester
United out of the competition.
Strunz believes that the Swiss outfit will certainly impose pressure on the German giants as they will be the underdogs and will have nothing to lose.
Bayern finished top of Group A which was unarguably the toughest among all groups with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Napoli-c40003, Manchester City and Villarreal gunning to progress. On the other hand, Basel finished second behind Benfica in their group.
While talking to Goal.com, the former German international further added:
"They [Basel] are obviously manageable opponents, especially since the first match will be played in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Switzerland-c3016. This should be no stumbling block for Bayern.”
"From the first knock-out round, we must not under-estimate any team. Whoever beat Manchester United certainly have quality. Nevertheless, Bayern are the clear favourites and, in my view, will reach the quarter-finals."
Strunz has called on the medical staff to try and keep influential midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Bastian-Schweinsteiger-c7374 fit for remainder of the European competition. The midfielder’s absence has left a huge gap in the Bayern midfield, as they have
lost three games without him recently.
Champions League action will resume next year in February and Bayern will travel to Switzerland for first of the two-legged tie. Strunz is confident of Bayern’s chances against Basel and is hoping to see his former club in final
of the competition which will take place in their own home.
The former German international made 97 league appearances for the Reds and bagged 11 goals during his five-year stay at the club. He also managed 41 international caps during his nine-year career with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904.
