Thomas Vermaelen ruled out for six more weeks
Arsenal centre back http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Thomas-Vermaelen-c35002 is expected to undergo an ankle surgery in the third week of January 2011 which will keep him out of action for six weeks.
That is bad news for manager Arsene Wenger, who would be forced to bring in an emergency centre back to cover for the Belgian.
Vermaelen has not played any part in Arsenal’s 2010-11 season due to an injury he picked up while playing for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Belgium-c2850. He was diagnosed with a torn Achilles and was expected to be back at the start of 2011. Even the manager confirmed that Vermaelen had resumed
first team training and was close to returning.
However, Arsenal’s stance has now taken a U-turn after the club confirmed that the 26-year-old would undergo a surgery soon and would be out of action for another six weeks.
Wenger used the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Johan-Djourou-c18779 to act as a cover for the Belgian and everything was going fine till Squillaci was injured in January 2011. The French is out with a leg injury and would not be available until
February.
This has led the Arsenal manager entering the transfer market to get a new centre back and he is looking for someone who has previous Premier League experience.
Vermaelen confirmed that to get rid of this issue, surgery is the final resolve and he would be travelling to Sweden soon to get his Achilles tendon operated upon.
“I'll undergo this operation in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sweden-c3015. According to the specialist, who will operate on me, it's a little tendon situated beside the Achilles tendon which is provoking the irritation,” said Vermaelen.
There are a number of defenders who have been linked to a move to the Gunners. The list includes Blackburn Rovers’ http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Cahill-c14439 and former Arsenal man, Matthew Upson.
