Arsenal defender and Belgian international, Thomas Vermaelen went on to have surgery performed on his Achilles heel yesterday. Following the operation, the player was expected to be out of action for up to three months. However, the player’s father has now
come forth and admitted that the recovery time that the doctors have quoted is much closer to six weeks.
Vermaelen’s father, when talking about his son’s surgery is quoted to have said: "The doctor in Stockholm, where Thomas was operated on last time too, recognised the problem now.
"He would not take any chances and immediately operated on Thomas. He expects a five to six weeks of unavailability."
The player is reported to have picked up the injury in the game against Udinese, but has since then been trying to play through the pain. That decision didn’t prove to be the smartest one on the player’s behalf as he was now forced to undergo the knife.
This isn’t the first time that Vermaelen has had his Achilles affect his performances. Last season, the player was out for as much as eight months following his injury, since no one was quite sure what was wrong with him and because he kept aggravating his
injury.
However, this time around, the doctors went on to identify the problem right away and this has helped the player not waste any extra time.
Nonetheless, the player’s loss is going to come as a big blow to the Gunners. The team is already going to be without http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jack-Wilshere-c17463 for the next two to three months and now Vermaelen has joined the midfielder on the recovery table.
Looking at the rate at which the Gunners are picking up injuries, it is a miracle and a blessing that the team went on to bring is strong positive reinforcements during the summer transfer window.
It is now up to Wenger to get the team to adapt to their latest setbacks and make do with what they have.
