Thomaz Bellucci defeats Pablo Andujar in the first round of Mutua Madrid Open
World number thirty six, Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil scored an easy victory over Pablo Andujar of Spain in the first round clash of the Mutua Madrid Open at the Park Manzanares in Madrid, Spain on Tuesday. The Brazilian pro ousted
his wild card opponent taking not more than 90 minutes of play.
The Mutua Madrid Open is ATP Masters’ second European stop after Monte-Carlo. Played on clay courts, the tournament is categorized as an ATP 1000 Series event, giving the winner a 1000-point increase in the ATP rankings.
Bellucci entered the field with the belief that this was his match to win and with Andujar all at sea from the start. Bellucci was ultimately able to force the pace of the match against his defensively-minded opponent, breaking
Andujar on seven occasions as the Spaniard’s serving let him down time and again.
Indeed, Andujar could only manage to land 60 percent of his first serves, though they were pretty good, but Bellucci feasted on his weaker serve, winning 81 percent of points on his first serves and 70 percent of points on his
second serves. The Brazilian pro broke Andujar’s serves in the ninth game to clinch the first set 6-4.
The second set was totally a breakfast for the Brazilian as he broke his opponent’s serve in the early game to clinch the set with a 6-2 score line. The Brazilian raised his first serve accuracy to 63 percent and won 58 percent
on his first serves and 55 percent on his second serves. The Brazilian clinched two of three breakpoints and smashed three aces to close out the set with a 6-2 score line.
Bellucci won 66 percent on his service, 46 percent on return and 55 percent in total. Andujar on the other hand was completely lagging behind in every field with 54 percent on service, 34 percent on return and a meager 45 percent
in total. Brazilian’s tremendous performance in every field, strongly suggested his victory over his opponent in straight sets. The 23-year-old Brazilian established a huge pressure on his opponent which definitely helped him winning the match.
Bellucci will next face Florian Mayer of Germany in the second round of the tournament. Players have never met each other at any of the ATP occasions and this will the first meeting between these two at the clay courts of the Park
Manzanares. Mayer edged past sixteenth seed Viktor Troicki of Serbia in first round of the tournament with a 4-6, 7-5, 4-6 score line. Mayer is ranked 30thwhich makes him only six places higher than Bellucci. Both players are in excellent form and
the second round match is expected to be an interesting one.
