Thomaz Bellucci takes down Dmitry Tursunov in the third round – Barcelona Open 2013
Brazilian tennis ace, Thomaz Bellucci, avenged his last year’s defeat at the hands of Dmitry Tursunov this Thursday, beating the Russian veteran in three gruelling sets in the third round of Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. The 16th
seed took one hour and 54 minutes to wrap up his victory at 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to book a spot in the quarter-final round of the ATP World Tour 500 event in Barcelona, Spain.
These two crafty players had a stiff battle at 2011 Shanghai Masters and Tursunov came out as the winner. He took off the Thursday’s contest in the same aggressive manner and cruised through the opening set of the match with commanding
ease. However, Bellucci took hold of the momentum and dictated the Russian in the following two sets to conclude his victory in style.
Tursunov was off to a flyer in the opener, breaking the Brazilian in his very first serve game and imposing a 3-0 lead in no time. Bellucci managed to crack a break point in the fifth game and eventually levelled the scores at
3-3. It seemed as if the set was heading towards a tie-break round but a timely break point conversion from Tursunov stunned the world number 44 to claim the first set at 6-4.
Bellucci came roaring in the following set and went for a four-game rampage. He nailed two consecutive break points, in the first and third game respectively, and imposed a 4-0 lead on his rival. Tursunov could hold just one serve
game before he suffered another hefty blow from the 16th seed Brazilian in the seventh game. Bellucci took the second set with a breadstick, 6-1.
Thing didn’t work out god for Tursunov at the start of the decisive third set and he dropped his serve early to fall to a 0-3 disadvantage right away. Bellucci held his lead intact and didn’t allow a single chance to the Russian
veteran to recover from the deficit. The Brazilian number one served out of the match at 5-3 comprehensively.
Bellucci will face the winner of the other quarter-final between Martin Klizan and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
