Thomaz Bellucci trashes Robin Kern to reach round two – Mercedes Cup 2012
Brazilian tennis star, Thomaz Bellucci, took down the local wildcard entrant, Robin Kern, in straight sets at the Mercedes Cup 2012 on Tuesday. He juggled up a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory against the 18-year-old to secure a spot in the round of 16 at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Stuttgart, Germany.
Bellucci stayed on track to bid for his third career title after triumphing over the world number 658 in their first duel against each other. After pocketing the match in one hour and 26 minutes, the Brazilian took lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series
by 1-0 against the German teenager and progressed into the second round at this outdoor clay court tournament.
The 24-year-old made a strong entry at the Tennis Club Weissenhof and after breaking his opponent’s serve twice, he leaped to a 4-1 lead. Despite squandering his lead and levelling the scores at 4-4, Bellucci remained focused and drag the set to a tie-breaker.
He dominated in it and subsequently carved out the opener with a 7-6(3) success.
Ranked 64th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Bellucci improved his game in the following set and after getting the coveted break in the second game, he leaped to a 3-0 lead. The Brazilian then held his remaining serves with
poise and cashed in another break chance in the last game to click the set with a 6-2 win.
Bellucci will next face third seeded Bernard Tomic who received a first round bye after being the top four players at this tournament.
The fifth seed, Robin Haase, became casualty of the day. He endured a 4-6, 5-7 shock at the hands of the Czech contender, Lukas Rosol, in one hour and 18 minutes.
The Dutch number one failed to capitalise on any of the four break chances he clobbered and warded off one out of three breakpoints he faced. He also formulated a poor first serve share of 49 per cent as compared to the Czech’s 54 per cent and spilled more
errors.
Rosol on the other hand booked a place in the following round where Germany’s Bjorn Phau is waiting.
