Thongchai Jaidee makes it into the top-50 in the Official World Golf Rankings – Golf news
Thongchai Jaidee made it into the top-50 in the Official World Golf Rankings, for the first time since 2010, courtesy of his second place finish at the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
The Thai star played amazingly well throughout the week and made it into the final match, where he contended against Graeme McDowell.
During the final round, Jaidee conceded only one bogey that came on the 14th hole. After the first six holes, he was having a 2UP lead, which McDowell squared by recording birdies on the seventh and the 12th
hole.
The Northern Irishman then added another two points to his scorecard, to finish the game with 2&1 in his favour.
Talking to the reporters after finishing his campaign at the Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort, Jaidee expressed his pleasure in performing well in the tournament. At the same time, the three-time Asian Tour
number one praised the way his rival played in the final match and said that it was McDowell’s brilliant short game that created a difference in scores of both the players.
“It was a very good week, only one mistake on 14, one bogey. I think it is a solid week for me and congratulations to McDowell, he played solid and very good play. For me, coming second, that is good for me.
That is big enough for me this week,” said Thongchai.
“He holed a lot of critical putts anyway. He never missed a putt. He hole all the putts, even save par like No. 4 and No. 5, and another hole, 9, 10. That’s where the game changed a little bit,” he added.
Despite losing in the final match, Jaidee managed to take secure enough rankings points to clinch the 49th position in the Official World Golf Rankings, which makes him eligible for participating in the second
major golf championship of the season, the US Open.
According to the US Open’s qualifying criteria, the top-60 players in the world rankings, as of May 27 and June 10, will tee off this year at the Merion Golf Club. The US Open is slated to start from June 13,
2013.
