Thor Hushovd to retire after the 2016 World Championships
One of the finest cyclists ever produced by Norway, Thor Hushovd has hinted about his retirement after the 2016 World Championships.
He has chosen a perfect venue to call it a day on his remarkable professional career in which he has proved his mettle to the fans across the world.
The 2016 World Championships are scheduled in his home ground Bergen, Norway, “I think I can guarantee that it would be my last race,” he briefed.
“To ride in the Worlds is a great experience anyway, but to do it at home would be a dream”.
The 34-year-old marked his professional debut with Team Credit Agricole in 2000 and spent a period of nine years with the side.
He accepted an offer from Cervelo TestTeam for 2009-10 seasons before joining Team Garmin-Cervelo in 2011.
The cyclist decided to end his association with Team Garmin by the end of 2011 and penned a deal with BMC Racing Team in 2012.
Thor has not yet registered a single win for the American team mainly because of his health constraints.
He fought a virus for the first half of the 2012 season and has decided to skip the Norwegian National Championships and the Tour de France.
Hushovd is eyeing the 2012 London Olympics as the biggest goal of his 2012 season and is hopeful to find the right legs ahead of the mega event.
“I feel much better in training than before the break. It is completely different and completely obvious that I needed a break,”' he told NTB earlier.
“I have started to build capacity through interval workouts in training, and, in Poland, I'm going to ride hard.
“As there aren't many races before the Olympics, it is important that I go deep when the opportunities present themselves".
“Now I'm 100 percent focused on the Olympics and the rest of the season”.
Thor rode brilliantly during the past edition of the Tour de France and secured the second, the 13th and the 16th stages of the race and held the yellow jersey for eight consecutive stages, stage 2-9.
He had a great chance to secure stages during the 2012 version of the race with Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador excluded from the race.
However, the health constraint restricted him from riding the Tour and his only chance to prove his strength is the 2012 Olympic Games.
