Thorbjorn Olesen records his debut European Tour win at the Sicilian Open
Thorbjorn Olesen recorded his debut win at the European’s Tour Sicilian Open on Sunday, April 1, 2012.
The 22-year-old professional golf player from Denmark amazed the world and displayed a good performance at the Verdura Golf and Spa Resort, in Sicily, Italy.
He scored a 15-under 273 and competed well throughout the four-day tournament. He shot a 69 on the final day and won his first title of the European Tour.
“It feels amazing. I had three seconds last year, so to finally get my first win is great.” Olesen said.
“I've been playing some great golf this year, without all parts of my game coming together. But this week my long and short game both came together, and it feels fantastic to finally get over the line”.
He started the tournament on Thursday and shot a 4-under 68 by scoring five birdies and a bogey. Then he added -3 on the leaderboard, by the help of five birdies and two bogeys.
His performance in the third and fourth rounds was tremendous. Olesen made an eagle on the 14th hole in the third round and was 5-under 67 on Saturday.
On Sunday, he was confident to become the winner, as his enormous scoring helped him to be among the top leaders of the tournament.
After carding six impressive birdies on Sunday, he was focusing to end the tournament at par.
The 18th hole was the toughest for the Danish. He used all the extra efforts and finished the 18th at par and 3-under 69 at day-end.
"I was definitely a bit nervous. I was just trying to focus on one shot at a time, but that's very difficult to do because your mind keeps thinking of other things.
"But I'm really happy to finish with a par on 18, because it's a really tough golf hole. So when I found the green with my second shot, I was very happy," Olesen said.
Chris Wood is the runner-up and was only one stroke behind the leader. Soren Kjeldsen and Nicolas Colsaerts finished tied on the third position and they finished three behind Olesen.
Olesen has been looking to win the first Europe’s title since turning professional in 2008. Now, he is the proud winner and also has five other professional wins.
