Thorbjorn Olesen takes a charge at the British Open
Thorbjorn Olesen surged into contention at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club after firing a four-under par 66 and took the fourth spot halfway through the British Open on Friday, July 20, 2012.
On another day, when the clouds surrounded the area with cool breeze blowing on the course, he recorded six birdies against a lone bogey for a five-under par two-round score.
He is currently five strokes adrift of Brandt Snedeker, who had a 10-under par score after two rounds.
The most disappointing moment for his day came on the 14th hole, when he, once again, carded a bogey, just as he did on Thursday.
According to him, he was learning from Tiger Woods, his playing partner, as the game moved on. Therefore, Woods was a great help to him in carding such a good score at a difficult course such as the links.
"He's been my idol so many years, so it's fantastic to have a chance to play with him. I'm really looking forward to it. I have a lot of confidence. I believe I can do it".
For the last few months, Olesen has been performing reasonably well, as he earned the first European Tour victory of his career at the 2012 Sicilian Open.
Therefore, he now has another chance to open his account in the major golf championships, with a consistent display of game in the remaining two rounds.
In the meantime, Paul Lawrie slipped down the leaderboard and took a share of the fifth position after he signed his scorecard with a one-over par 71.
In 1999, Lawrie was 10 strokes behind the leader when he entered the weekend of the Open Championship.
Yet, he then managed to tie for the top position at the end of the fourth round and defeated Justin Leonard and Jean van de Velde in the sudden-death playoffs.
When he was asked about making any comparison with his performance 13 years back, he said,
"Not really, because I was well behind. Maybe not so much after two days but I was 10 shots back in '99 with a round to go. What am I now, six shots at the moment? So you're looking to claw a few of them back tomorrow and give yourself a chance".
