Thoroughbred breeder or Greyhound breeder?

I've always wanted to breed race horses, because it's something i love. I live in west Virginia and my mom ame across an article on how breeders are getting paid high money these days. The thing is the Greyhound breeders are getting more money than horse breeders. I kind of think the Greyhounds would be easier to care for and, will be cheaper than horses.

i know im only 15, but it's something i want to do and i want to know which sounds better. i mean when im older that is lol

  1. Don't think you're going to make any money breeding anything. It takes a LOT of time and money to breed responsibly. For dogs, most breeders only have a litter or two a year, and they barely make back the money that they put into it. Remember, you can't just think about the money you make from selling the animals - you'll be spending a lot, too, and it's entirely possible you'll even lose money.

As for horses - I have a relative who keeps racehorses. Harness racing, not thoroughbreds, bu I'm assuming there are similarities when it comes to money. She may breed some of her horses, but it's not a primary source of income for her. The money she makes is mostly from boarding other horses and from the races themselves. Even if one individual horse sells for a lot, remember that a lot of time and money was required to get the horse to that point - it's more compensation for what's been spent than profit.

EDIT: I'm not trying to discourage you if that's what you want to do, but there are lots of people who think that getting into breeding animals will bring them lots of money. It won't!

  2. Yay! First one to answer! Personally, I like Horses better than Greyhounds. Horses may be more expensive, but it's all worth it, when you know that they might become famous racehorse stars. Or, when you get to sleep well at night that you were responsible for making sure that the horse gets to a good owner. Greyhounds, you'd have to like house train them, I think. I don't know how dog breeders take care of horses. But anyways, I'd definitely way rather be a horse breeder more! But, I do like dogs to. I love all animals. I just like Horses better.
