Thos Hushovd to ride both, the Giro and the Tour for the 2012 season
BMC Racing Team’s Director John Lelangue has briefed that their star rider Thor Hushovd will participate at the two Grand Tours during the 2012 season.
It was believed earlier that the Norwegian will only ride the Italian Grand Tour and Cadel Evans will be the main contender for Team BMC in France.
It has now been revealed that the cyclist will represent the American team at the Tour de France and the Giro d’ Italia during the coming season.
Lelangue told tv2.no, “Of course. He is one of our main pieces for the Tour”. The former world champion will be seen in a number of events for the season ahead.
He has already shown interest to ride the Paris-Roubaix, Giro, Tour, the London Olympics Games and might also test his legs at the World Championships.
It will be his 12th consecutive appearance at the Tour de France since 2001.He bagged the point’s classifications at the Tour de France 2005 and 2009.
Hushovd claimed as many as ten stage victories at the event, including the two in the most recent version of the race and is keen to fill his pockets with few more wins in the season ahead.
Thor’s only participation at the Giro d’ Italia was back in 2007, where he succeeded in claiming a stage victory.
“He does not go to the Giro to win overall. For Thor, it is the perfect start in Denmark and a prologue that he is good at, and the opening stages suit him,” Lelangue briefed.
Hushovd made his debut with Team BMC at the Tour of Qatar and was unfortunate as he was caught up with punctures and crashed during the six day race.
“We know that Thor is most focused on Flanders, Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix. These are three of his main goals for the season. Gilbert, for example, is more focused on the Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Amstel Gold Race,” John cited.
Cadel Evans won the Tour de France 2011 and he will be the first choice for BMC Racing Team for the 2012 version of the French Grand Tour.
The Australian secured his first overall victory at the race and is training hard to make it his second consecutive win on French soil.
