Those annoying little insects...?

Does anyone know the official name for those tiny, black insects which seem to come out in their millions whenever there's a storm about? They look like little black splinters, are attracted to anything white and annoy the c**p out of you. Not big enough to even really notice, but just big enough to tickle when they walk over you!

When I was a kid, Mum used to call them thunderbugs, but I've no idea if this is what they are really called! We seem to have an infestation today and my bedroom is absolutely smothered in them.
