Those mats that say they can keep your puzzle rolled up together...do they really work?

My Father-in-law has one, and he does big puzzles, and the mat seems to work OK for him. Sometimes the puzzle comes apart a bit, but all the pieces are in the right place when it is unrolled, so it is easy to put back together.
