"Serious psychology differs radically from such nonscientific competitors as astrology, graphology, fortune telling, and numerology....When put to the test, the claims of psychics, astrologers, and the like turn out to be vague or untestable and their predictions dead wrong" (Invitation to Psychology, Carole Wade and Carol Tavris, 1999). They quoted from an article by Geoffrey Dean and Walter F. Rowe.

  1. The statement is seriously ignorant.  Astrology is not in  competition with psychology or psychotherapy for that matter - a distinction the author of the quote missed.  Neither is fortune telling and numerology in competition with psychology.

This is a classic straw man argument whereby the propagandist sets up an easy to knock down target.  Geoffrey Dean has been peddling his particular brand of nonsense, bogus tests, and unsupportable statements for years.  Psychology is the study of human behavior.  Astrology, graphology, numerology, et al, are not. So what is the point of the comparison?

PS Psychology at it very best might be considered a "soft science."  It is definitely not hard science.  Round file the quote: that's more than it deserves.

  2. I have been a practicing professional astrologer since 1986. I have done a few hundred readings for paying clients. Many of them have contacted me later on to thank me for helping them understand themselves better, so they could make positive changes in their lives. I have had clients call me to verify the result of predictions I have made in their charts. I have never been "vague or untestable."

I respect and accept the evidence of my own experiences and my own senses first and foremost. I couldn't care less about some ignorant author's unfounded opinion.

Oh, and BTW, I am a Capricorn.

  3. I honestly believe in astrology, but it doesn't rule every step I take, like when it comes to love, astrology doesn't always have to be true!

    I'm a Leo

    x*x

  4. I think that if you believe in something enough you can make it true, If someone believes in astrology enough they will find ways to apply it and make it true every chance they get. On the same token, If you don't believe in astrology and psychics enough you can find ways to prove then wrong every time! I think that some times people need to sit back and have a good long look at what is really going on! some times you might be surprised to find that your opinions of things will change! I believe in astrology to a certain extent however I am able to understand that it is not the only way of looking at things!

  5. We capricorns don't believe in Astrology.

  6. Well, they might get more reliable answers from astrology if they were actually testing astrology, but they're not. They're basing their tests on Sun sign astrology or "horoscopes" which any astrologer will tell you is inaccurate. So really, no news here at all. Just the same old uneducated narrow minds flapping their gums about something which they know nothing about in a vain attempt to makes themselves appear intellectually superior.

And BTW, astrology does not require belief. It works regardless of whether or not you choose to "believe" in it.

    Yawn.
