Thoughtful gift?

If someone said that you gave them a thoughtful gift, what does that mean?

it means that it is an appropriate gift for the occasion, the receipent and timing. obviously you have given some thoughts when you decided on the gift. may not be exactly what the person want but it is definitely not something they would put one side and forget about it.

It means that you were kind to give them a gift or that you put some thought into the choosing of the gift, for instance if someone likes monkeys and you got them a book about monkeys.

It means that they know that you took the time to really think about what to give. It's a compliment. I would much rather get a thoughtful gift than an expensive gift that didn't mean anything to me.
