Question:

Thoughts of the name

A minute ago I posted a question asking opinions on the name Tirion.

It is a female name of which is welsh and means tender one.

It's my name and Im insulted that several people told me to not make up names!

If one insists on insulting rather than helping one on Yahoo atleast research first to see if it is a made up name! Which it is not.

;]

Any opinions now you know it is a real name?

  1. i think thats really cool how it means tender love. i like it :)

  2. In http://www.behindthename.com you can see that there isnt a name so I dont beleve you that it isnt made up and Its hideous

  3. I like it.

  4. I like Trini more.

  5. Sorry, but I still don't like it, no offense or anything. It sounds awfully masculine. I don't know why you even posted this question if you get mad at people for giving you their opinions. Isn't that what this website is all about?

  6. To me it sounds very much like a boys name. Like Tyrone or Kerian. It isn't bad, just very masculine sounding to me for a girl. I'm just giving you an honost opinion, not trying to insult you. Good Luck.

    Happiness-

You know, some people can be cruel and ignorant when it comes to these answers, but at the same time, you are asking for an opinion and they are giving it. Clearly alot of people do not like your name. If you didn't want others opinions, don't ask them for it. Clearly all you wanted was a bunch of unanomous "it's a great name", and "oh it's lovely" answers. For all I care name your daughter Kookookaakaa, but don't ask for opinions, them get cranky when you get them.

  7. I actually quite like it.  It's unique and you could nickname her Tiri which I think is cute.

  8. i like it, it's very pretty. you can call her tiri as a nickname - that's cute.

  9. I like the name...I think it is unique. You know someone had to make up names at one point in time or another. i don't know y people complain anyway. I think some people are just stuck in old times.

  10. I never heard of it be4 but that doesn't mean u made it up.

    :D

  11. Tirion is a beautiful name and is also very rare. I speak Welsh fluently and work as a teacher in a Welsh Medium school. I have never met anyone with this name. You should you really proud that you have such a unique name.

It also means considerate, humane and lenient.

May I also say that I loved the comment some idiot made about JRR Tolkien making it up - do they not realise that he stole most of his names from Celtic Welsh.

Have to say that as a Welsh speaker it DOES NOT sound masculine at all - most ppl on this just can't pronounce it properly.

I still love the way that some muppets believe that you have made it up - just because it's not on some baby naming web site.

  12. I don't like it! I am sorry, but it doesn't sound feminine enough to be a girl's name.I realize it's your name, but this is just my honest opinion! I guess it could be cute if you used the nickname Tori or something like that, but I just don't like it. Sorry!

  13. Well, it's unique. It sounds like the name of my car (Tiburon). It's not a bad name. It's not something I would name my children, but it doesn't make me want to cringe, like Nevaeh or Clementine or something. People on here always think that people are making up names just because they're unique. It's not a terrible name, and it has a great meaning. So, don't be ashamed of it.

Plus, you could be in the same boat as me and have the 16th most popular name in the US of all time, and have 4897495645 people turn around when someone says your name. Yeah... it sucks.

  14. Tirion is very pretty-and you may not pronounce it how some people are thinking. The way I'm sounding it out sounds feminine to me-I'm not stressing the "on" at the end...

  15. i like it a lot! it reminds me of a something you'd name a constellation -  very pretty.

  16. parents can be so cruel with names

  17. Different is good

  18. i think its quite original and absolutely beautiful,I'm would be insulted to if someone told me my name was made up,*but my name is emily and quite common so i dont think any one would think it is made up*i hate it when you ask a perfectly genuine and good question on yahoo and people twist your words and insult you,but back to the point,i think it is a great name and if i was having a child i would really think about that name.

This would be my basis for assuming the name was possibly fabricated since this is the site I usually use. This would send me to Google to find any other references.

Tirion. The lack of a date in the citation in Gruffudd and the fact that Tirion is documented as a placename in Period in Celtic Remains, combined with the lack of any evidence of Tir- as an element in compound names forces us to request Period documentation of Tirion as a given before we can register it." Searching Welsh Mythology in Wikipedia reveals NO record of the name Tirion.

The closest reference I could find was from the Celtopedia site:

In Welsh mythology, Teyrnon or Teirnon was the foster father of Pryderi.

The child appeared in the court of King Teyrnon, whose mares had just given birth but the foals had disappeared. Teyrnon watched his stables and saw a mysterious beast coming to take the foal; Teyrnon stopped the beast and found the child outside the stable. He and his wife adopted him. The child grew to adulthood in only seven years and was given the foal which had led Teyrnon to the stable. Teyrnon realized who the child was and returned him to Pwyll and Rhiannon, his parents, who named him Pryderi (worry).

Your first site does show the name & the meaning you ascribe. Your 2nd site does NOT validate the name in any way; just asks if people would use it.

Based on this research, I would come to the conclusion that this is a fabricated name. I used one last reference (Welsh dictionary) and found this entry:

      English

    adj:   kind

    Welsh

    mwyn; tirion; hynaws; rhadlon

    So, uncommon? Indeed

So uncommon that it took 20 minutes to track it down.

However, it's a delightful name. I LOVE names tied to one's ancestry!

"It's my name and Im insulted that several people told me to not make up names!"

Looks like you need to stop being insulted and realize, especially on Y!A, that a name this different will always be a fabrication suspect.

  23. My friends grand daughter is called Tirion, she's welsh, although I've never heard it before I quite like it
