Question:

Thoughts on Hunter Mountain, NY???

I am thinking of going to Hunter Mountain for my spring break because I have a friend that has a house nearby. As far as east coast mountains that aren't too far north what do you think of it? I am an advanced skier and specialize in freestyle. How are the conditions? Anything else about the resort would be appreciated.

  1. I'd go there if I had mid-week skiing plans. I'd never go there on a holiday or weekend. I used to go every year the week after Easter. It was usually pretty good except when Easter fell very late in April. The problem with mid-week at Hunter is sometimes they don't run all of the lifts and thus some of the slopes are closed. Hunter also likes to close slopes with thin cover rather than just put up a sign and let the skiiers decide for themselves if they want to go down. This has been improving over the past few years...but I haven't been there in five years either, so they may be back to their old tricks.

I could have went to Hunter last Wednesday, but opted for Gore instead. It's only another hour-and-a-half up I-87 and for the price, it was worth it for me. Depending on conditions next week, I may yet go to Hunter.

I won't BS you. Spring conditions are usually not the best for freestyle. In general, parks are either really icy or really mushy. At Hunter, the west side can get some nice corn, but plan on getting wet unless there is some freak snowstorm.

  2. I don't like hunter, but I haven't been there since 2001.  My dad hates it and he has skied there a lot.

As of a few years ago, mountain creek (vernon, ny) and Hunter mountain were number 1 and 2 in the country for stolen equipment (I'm not sure which one was 1 and which was 2).  I like Windham a lot better. I have a season pass for there and i go as often as I can, about two to three times per week since I'm in college. Hunter and Windham are about 10-15 minutes away from each other.  I don't know about hunter, but windham's halfpipe is no longer there, but they have some big jumps in the Warm up Park and rails in Wilbur park, the Warm Up park and Wraparound park. I was there on monday and it was pretty nice.  It rained today but that shouldn't do any harm.  I'm going on Friday and one day next week, since I will be on spring break and my school is closer to windham than i am.  if you see a Jedi (actually, I'm still a Padawan, but I'm almost a Jedi), thats me. The conditions haven't been that great, but they are good for spring. Monday was good, but the wednesday before was a lot better.  I would be just getting back from there now, but it is raining, but that shouldn't ruin anything. They have snow flurries in the forecast for tonight.

Hunter probably has a better terrain park right now.

The conditions at windham and hunter are probably similar, but my dad said that hunter has bad groomming. A woman at the ski shop at hunter said that they have better grooming than windham.
