Question:

Thoughts on a Spanish poem?

I would greatly appreciate anyone's thoughts on this poem by Andrés Bello. Symbolic, thematic or rhythmic thoughts, or anything else you can think of will do! Here is the Spanish translation:

Rubia

¿Sabes, rubia, qué gracia solicito

cuando de ofrendas cubro los altares?

No ricos muebles, no soberbios lares,

ni una mesa que adule al apetito.

De Aragua a las orillas un distrito

que me tribute fáciles manjares,

do vecino a mis rústicos hogares

entre peñascos corra un arroyito.

Para acogerme en el calor estivo,

que tenga una arboleda también quiero,

do crezca junto al sauce el coco altivo.

¡Felice yo si en este albergue muero;

y al exhalar mi aliento fugitivo,

sello en tus labios el adiós postrero!

  1. Bello doesn't ask for much. Only the way back to Eden with Eve, the "eterno retorno" to the simple, rustic delights of paradise. Not much! And to die there after a long, happy life, in the arms of his beloved. And that the Fall never happened at all, or at least that it be forgiven. Is that too much to ask?

The poem is a sonnet whose rhythm sways like a hammock in the Venezuelan summer breeze, accompanied by the music of a little brook gurgling among the rocks. Not much, yet everything.

And not much has changed in two centuries. We would all still like to get back to the garden, if only we could.

  2. I don't speak spanish, so I won't say anything to the symbolism part. But you should note the endings on each line, as they have a certain pattern:

    -ito

    -res

    -res

    -ito

    -ito

    -res

    -res

    -ito

    -ivo

    -ero

    -ivo

    -ero

    -ivo

    -ero

The first two are the same, and on the last two verses(?) the endings are 'inverted'. If you have to analyse the poem, the endings are an obvious mention as they create the rhythm. But why that structure? Also the poem starts with a question and ends in a shout.
